Awards pundits and film critics have been speculating about the most anticipated nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards for months now. However, now that the Golden Globes have revealed their winners, the guessing game becomes even more interesting. It may still be a little early to list our own set of nominations and winners for the big night. However, movie buffs and critics are pretty sure when it comes to predicting recent favorites and possible winners.
Wondering whether Moonlight will get a Best Picture nomination? Can Ryan Gosling actually win an Oscar? Will it be Emma Stone or Natalie Portman to grab an Academy Award this year? Let’s take a look at our list of the most anticipated nominations for the Academy Awards and possible winners of 2017. The actual list will be announced on January 24.
Likely Best Picture Nominees
As of now, the Best Picture looks like a close battle between La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea. However, movies such as Hacksaw Ridge, Fences, Hidden Figures, Lion, and Jackie can play spoilers.
Final Expected List
- Manchester by the Sea
- Hacksaw Ridge
- Hidden Figures
- La La Land
Likely Best Director Nominees
It is surely going to be a race between Barry Jenkins and Damien Chazelle. Denzel Washington may also land an Academy Award for his classy helming of Fences. Past winners Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese may also enter the race, while Kenneth Lonergan, who directed Manchester by the Sea, seems a lock at this stage.
Likely Best Actress Nominees
This looks like a race between Emma Stone, with her star turn in La La Land, and Natalie Portman in Jackie. Expect Meryl Streep to get her obligatory nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins, while Amy Adams, Annette Bening, Isabelle Huppert, and Ruth Negga might sneak in.
Likely Best Actor Nominees
This is perhaps the toughest of all categories to predict. As of now, Casey Affleck is leading the race, having won a number of awards for his role as a janitor in Manchester by the Sea. Expect Denzel Washington to score a nomination in this category as well for Fences. The outside contender is Ryan Gosling for La La Land. Andrew Garfield, who stars in both Silence and Hacksaw Ridge, Tom Hanks in Sully, and Viggo Mortensen are also likely to receive nominations.
Likely Best Supporting Actress Nominees
If Viola Davis fails to win this category, it will be the most shocking event at this year’s Academy Awards. Michelle Williams is another obvious competitor her supporting role in Manchester by the Sea. The ladies from Hidden Figures and 20th Century Women might feature heavily here as well, while Naomie Harris is the outside contender for Moonlight. Oscar winner Nicole Kidman might also sneak into the mix for Lion.
Best Supporting Actor Nominations
Lucas Hedges’ clever portrayal in Manchester and Mahershala Ali’s tender performance in Moonlight are the most expected to be recognized. The Academy can also appreciate Jeff Bridges’ Texas lawman in Hell or High Water, while Michael Shannon’s comical performance as a sheriff in Nocturnal Animals has been a critics’ favorite this year.
