Ever since I was a little kid, I was always a die-hard fan of Star Wars. Everything about the series impressed me from an early age. Back in the day, we didn’t even have CDs, DVDs or the Internet to watch the movies, yet I knew every detail about the storyline and every character. I used to watch the movies on tapes so many times, that they would eventually begin to wear out. I even fought with my brother incessantly over, which Star Wars movie was best (I personally loved “The Empire Strikes Back”.
Now, with the franchise back on our radar with new spin-offs and releases, I think it’s time for us to take a step back in nostalgia and reflect on a few of the important life lessons the Star Wars series has taught us. Below are five lessons I learned watching Star Wars, which I’ve related to in every phase of life.
1. Failing Is Part of Succeeding
One of the most important lessons I learned from Star Wars is that failing is a part of succeeding. Without failure, we wouldn’t know the path to success. Most importantly, if we didn’t fail, we would have no struggle or motivation to do good. Obi-Wan Kenobi challenges Darth Vader to strike him, vowing that he will become more powerful. This is exactly the kind of attitude every person should have towards life.
2. Size doesn’t matter
If you’re a Star Wars fan, you probably have an idea of what I’m talking about. Yoda, the most famed character in the series and arguably the most powerful Jedi is incredibly small. His first impression would make anyone think of him being weak or feeble. However, Yoda just proves to be the opposite. He teaches us an important lesson: appearances can be deceiving. This can further teach you never to underestimate one’s capabilities. Even a small hero can make a huge difference.
3. You Must Overcome Fear
Although it would be unwise to expect not to have feelings of fear, Star Wars teaches us, that fear is the enemy to our success. In order to become a better person and grow, you need to overcome your fear in every aspect of life. There’s definitely no arguing here.
4. There’s a Little Good and Evil in Everybody
Star Wars is a story that focuses on evil versus good. Dark versus light. The entire movie series is a great example of how there’s a little evil in every good person and a little good in every evil person. The circumstances lead to a person being that way.
5. You Get What You Deserve
What do Sebulba, Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt and every other evil entity have in common? They all got what was coming for them. Star Wars tells us time and time again that as long as you do good, everything that will happen to you will be good. On the other hand, if you become two-faced or greedy, it will always catch up to you in the worst way possible.
